Wal-Mart taps into mobile apps to aid in-store shoppers
Wal-Mart has turned to Big Data to create personalized shopping lists for in-store buyers via its mobile application. That is among the steps the retailer is taking to stay on top of the trend of consumers using their smartphones to influence their in-store choices, an executive told CTIA 2013 on Wednesday. Gibu Thomas, Wal-Mart's global mobile chief, predicted in his keynote speech that mobile-influenced buying inside stores would double e-commerce sales by 2016.
"The future of retailing is the history of retailing, of a personalized interactive experience for every customer delivered through a smartphone," Thomas said. Citing independent studies of the U.S. market, Thomas said in-store buying influenced by mobile use was on track to be about twice as big as e-commerce sales by 2016.
